A Conversation with Mobile Artist Carolyn Frischling

In the coming months I hope to include more artists who have participated in group or singular exhibitions. I recently had a conversation with Carolyn Frischling regarding her work that is currently on exhibit in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

What is your name and where do you live?
Carolyn:  My name is Carolyn Frischling and I live in a little historic town called Sewickley near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

How did you get started in mobile photography?
Carolyn:  I was always on the go and so I started experimenting with creative apps on my iPhone. I would regularly search the App Store, eventually downloading hundreds of apps and learning what they do. My husband, Michael Frischling, encouraged me and was very supportive. I make time every week to see what is new.

What devices do you use?

Mob Street Photographer Paul "Skip" Brown | A Fisherman Not Hunter

To kick off the Mob Street Flickr Group, I'd like to feature a piece by Skip Brown. Just as I've done with the Mob Paint Flickr Group, I plan to alternate between showcase and artist features every other week. Monday is all about Mob Paint and Tuesday will be for the Mob Street Group. For a chance to be featured, just join the group and start submitting your street photos shot with a mobile device (limit one per week).

World Cup Mania - Creating a Composite

World Cup © Geri Centonze

Everywhere you go there's a lot of hype about the World Cup. When I hear "World Cup" I see a "literal vision" in my mind of the world in a cup so I decided to create an image based on the vision in my mind's eye.

The Painterly Flickr group has a new name - Mob Paint. I am trying to "brand" Art of Mob wherever we have a presence, so I thought in keeping with the blog title the painterly group will now be called Mob Paint. In addition, if you are also a mobile street photographer, please join the newly formed Mob Street Flickr Group. I will be highlighting artists and work from this group here as well.

As always, a special thank you to all of the contributors - your work continues to inspire!

An Interview with Street Photographer Omar Z. Robles

I'm breaking the rules with this interview. I normally feature photographers who use only an iPhone or other mobile device, but I wanted some advice on street photography, so I asked Omar Robles if he'd share a few pointers and he was happy to help me out. All of the advice he has shared could easily be applied to iPhone photography.

What is your name and where do you live?
Omar:  Omar Z. Robles and I currently live in New York City.

How did you get started with photography?
Omar:  Long story short, when I went back to college to finish my Bachelor's in Communication and Visual Arts, I had to take a photography class. The professor really liked my work and encouraged me to pursue it further. Shortly after, my brother was working as a journalist for a lifestyle magazine called Metro San Juan. At the same time, they were hiring photographers and my brother took the initiative to submit some of my work to the editors. The editors liked my work and I started working for them first covering social events and little by little I moved up to shoot portraits for featured stories. By the end of the year, I was promoted to shoot their fashion editorials.

What Does iOS 8 Offer the iPhone Photographer?

iOS 8 offers lots of new features, but what exactly is in store for those of us whose basic interest is iPhone photography? Here's what we have to look forward to with the release of iOS 8 this fall.

Photos Available on All Devices - With iOS 8, every photo and video will be on iCloud and available across all off your devices or on the web. This differs from Photostream which is either on or off and only allows a limited number of photos to be stored. With iCloud you get 5GB of free storage and purchased plans start at just $0.99 per month for 20GB and 200GB for $3.99/month. When you crop, straighten or enhance an image on one device, you'll see the changes on all your devices when using iCloud. But you can always revert back to your original photograph with nondestructive editing.

The Whole Story by Elaine Bastajian

The Whole Story by Elaine Bastajian

I've had an iPhone a little over a year but had been a Hipstamatic Holdout until a couple of weeks ago. I was experimenting with Hipsta the other day while on my way downtown on the Max, Portland's light rail system, when I noticed this interesting character walking down the street. I thought he would make a great subject for a Hipstamatic image so I took his picture through the window of the train as he strode by.

Although I admire the genre of street photography, I am timid about taking pictures of strangers. But the need to pass the time when I'm riding public transportation has emboldened me to overcome my timidity and snap a photo or two of my fellow passengers. Of course, it was easier for me to take this picture since the subject was outside the train!

It was a quick shot and it didn't turn out very well, but I figured that with the help of a few apps I might be able to make it more interesting. A few weeks ago Geri held a drawing here on the Art of Mob for a promo code for ToonCamera and I was one of the winners! It seemed like it would be a good app to use to stylize this photo and camouflage the fact that the subject was out of focus.

iPhone 5s, iPad Mini Retina
Hipstamatic: Kaimal Mark ll, Blanko
Snapseed: Crop (remove Hipsta frame); Straighten horizontal lines
Perspective Correct: Straighten vertical lines
ToonCamera: Fountain Pen; Third variation of less squiggly line style
Background (original photo) - Brightness 50%, Contrast -20%, Saturation -60%, Temperature 10%
Foreground (ToonCamera edit) - Multiply Blend Mode, Opacity 100%, Brightness 40%, Contrast 100%, Saturation 0%, Temperature 10%
Snapseed: Frame 10

Advanced Editing Tools on Instagram

After a wonderful family visit and lots of photo opportunities with my granddaughters, I'm back to blogging. A lot has happened this past week on the mobile photography front. One of the first things I wanted to review were the new Instagram advanced editing tools. This could be one of the best updates to Instagram ever because now you may not have to use another app to get your photos just right! There are ten new editing tools. You also now have the ability to adjust the strength of the Instagram filters - just double-tap to adjust.

Here's a step-by-step progression of an image edited entirely with Instagram.
