How to Put the Internet to Work for You with IFTTT

What is IFTTT?  It's a service that allows you to create connections using the statement: IF This Then That, where THIS is the trigger and THAT is the action. It's made my life just a bit easier. I'm not the only one who likes it. Here's What PC Mag had to say about it:
"If this, then that'—shorten that little tag line to ifttt, and you've got one of the best apps on the market. This amazingly simple yet powerful iPhone app can automate just about anything you'd want to do in your digital life, from backing up photos on Facebook to sending you text message reminders of upcoming appointments."

You can create your own recipes or choose from the thousands already created by users at There's also an IFTTT app. Here are just a few ideas showing some of the recipes you can use with IFTTT.

The Art of Collaboration

Unique to the Instagram experience is the ability to connect with other artists and collaborate on a photograph.  It can involve just the photographer and a single editor or any number of photographers and editors to get a unique take on an image.

I have had the honor of getting permission to edit some really wonderful images from some of my favorite photographers.

Here are a few of my favorite collaborations.  The original photographer is credited under each image. Click on the image and you can see more of their photos at Instagram or EyeEm.

The first image below is an original by Richard @thelongsilence. For fans of his work, I have an interview coming up soon, so stay tuned!  The image was just brilliant in its original form, but I decided to add some mist, remove the vegetation, darken the sky and grunge it up!

Use Instacommentor and Make Your Mother Proud

My Mom was big on know, "please" and "thank you"and saying "excuse me" even if someone bumped into ME! Keeping up with the comments left on your Instagram photos can be a difficult task, because if you're not checking several times a day, the comments drop off of your News feed and there's no way to retrieve them unless you scroll through and check each photo. Wouldn't it be nice if you could find those comments you missed? Well, there's an app for that and it's called Instacommentor ($0.99)

Here's how it works:

Open Instacommentor (you'll have to add you Instagram account to use the app). Click on My Posts and wait for it to refresh.

One of the things I love most about photo sharing communities is the ability to connect with people around the world.  Today I highlight the work of Wojtek Papaj, a member of the Painterly Mobile Art Flickr Group.  My heritage is Polish so it's interesting to meet someone who may have been a neighbor had my ancestors stayed in Poland!

As part of this ongoing series, I asked Wojtek to select one of his favorite images and tell us a little more about it. Please visit the group to see more of his work along with that of all of the artists. If you are a mobile photographer, we'd love to have you join.

The Whole Story - Photo by Mark Peterson

Curiosity may have killed the cat, but luckily I'm not of the feline species because I was very curious to know what was going on in this photo. Luckily I got The Whole Story from photographer Mark Peterson. After reading Mark's bio I would love to hear stories about his father's experience as a Navy combat photographer!

Just the Facts Ma'am - What's New for the iPhone 5S Camera?

What would Dragnet's Sergeant Joe Friday want to know about the new iPhone 5S camera? "Just the facts ma'am, nothing but the facts." Phil Schiller said today at the Apple Event, "we just want to take a picture and have the iPhone take a better picture for us." Will the iPhone 5S help us achieve that end?

For all of the Joe Fridays out there, here are the facts in a nutshell.
  • 5-element Apple designed lens with f2.2 aperture which lets more light into sensor
  • Sensor 15% larger active area
  • Auto White Balance
  • Auto Exposure
  • Dynamic Local Tone Map for better highlights and shadows
  • Takes multiple photos and analyzes for sharpest image
  • True Tone Flash with 2 LEDs - Cool White and Warm Amber which analyzes scene in real time and adjusts to situation for best flash color
  • Auto image stabilization
  • Burst mode - hold shutter button for 10fps. A7 chip selects "best shot"
  • Slo-Mo - select for slow motion video (120 fps)

App-Dicted - 454 and Counting!

A question I get asked a lot is, "how many photo apps do you have?" I decided to post a list of the 454 apps currently on my iPhone and iPad. Many I got when they were offered for FREE or at a reduced price, but I also purchased a lot of them. In comparison to what the average traditional photographer spends on equipment or programs like Photoshop, the amount I've spent doesn't come close.

The list below doesn't include all of the apps I downloaded and deleted.  I am not endorsing all of these apps as some I have barely looked at. It's one of my goals to go through each and eliminate the ones that duplicate the functions that others do better (there are a lot of those!) and also the apps that don't save at full resolution.  The list of apps will remain on a static page as well for your future reference.

Short Listed for the IPA Quarterly

In August of 2012 I attended the L.A. Mobile Arts Festival. At that time I had probably taken less than 100 images with my iPhone and didn't know the difference between Snapseed and Filterstorm. With just a little more than a year of experience and a passion that has totally consumed me, I entered the IPA Quarterly for a chance to be shortlisted and possibly even exhibited at the event in October.

Today I received the good news that my photo, The Recital was on the shortlist. There were more than 2400 entries and 54 were selected, so this is a really big deal for me. There's nothing more rewarding than striving to do well at something and actually coming close to accomplishing it.

New Limited Edition FREE Street Etiquette Pack for VSCO Cam

One of my favorite apps is VSCO Cam.  I love the beautiful filters available and the user interface is sleek as well.  Now available for FREE through the in-app store in VSCO Cam, is the new Street Etiquette Preset Pack.

I did a quick edit with each of the three presets. I really like SE 1 and SE 3.  I find SE2 a bit too strong for my liking, but you can always tone it down with the adjustable slider.

Here are all three at full strength:

Brad Puet Talks Mobile Photography

Brad Puet, co-founder of We Are Juxt, and someone I've had the pleasure of meeting in person, recently appeared on the New Day television show out of Seattle. Brad's appearance includes a live demo using Snapseed to show basic editing techniques.

Brad was also appearing to promote the community photowalk and photo contest that will be held on Saturday, September 7 from 5:30 p.m. until dusk at Seattle's Olympic Sculpture Park. More information is available here. If you're in the Seattle area, you'll want to attend to learn and possibly win a Nokia Lumia 1020, Adobe Lightroom, Joby Gorillapods or more great items for the mobile photographer!

It's so nice to see Brad getting the exposure for mobile photography and We Are Juxt. Just for the record, he gives really great hugs!

The Art of iPhone Photography - Straight Talk with Authors Bob Weil and Nicki Fitz-Gerald

Just over a year ago, I discovered that I could use my iPhone as a means for creating art. When I started interacting with fellow enthusiasts on Instagram, Flickr and EyeEm I realized I had found "my people"- those other crazy souls who are just as smitten as I am with this means of artistic expression. Now, there's a fabulous resource that EVERY iPhone photographer should have. It's the newly released book, The Art of iPhone Photography: Creating Great Photos and Art on Your iPhoneby Bob Weil and Nicki Fitz-Gerald. Through the miracle of the internet, I was able to interview Bob and Nicki on this exciting new venture!

Kickstarter Campaign for iblazr Ends in Less Than 10 hours!

As soon as I post this, I'm headed over to Kickstarter to reserve my iblazr - the LED flash for smartphones and tablets. I don't use the flash on my iPhone at all, but I'm eager to experiment with this device.  The campaign ends in less than 10 hours, so it's the last chance to order at the reduced price.

Repix Just Keeps Getting Better!

If you've purchased the Master Collection of Brushes in Repix, the latest update included the Raven Brush for adding flocks of birds to your images and a new Grunge Brush that adds paint cracks and surface damage effects.  For me the real winner of this update is the Chalk Brush!  The Chalk Brush has two settings, one which only allows for vertical strokes and when you click the + sign it converts to a brush that allows you to vary the direction of the strokes.

The images below were created in part with Repix.  All apps used for the edits are listed below each image.

Repix has surely been one of the best apps to come on the market for editing painterly images.  It definitely gets two thumbs WAY up in my book!
